I awoke this morning to some great news. The UK MoD has announced that after a trial for a new service pistol consisting of 7 contenders they have chosen the Glock 17 Gen 4 to replace the Browning Hi-Power which has seen 45 years of service. The MoD has awarded a £9m contract with Viking Arms Ltd of Harrogate to provide more than 25,000 new Glock pistols and Blackhawk! holsters. Interestingly, the British purchased a number of SIG pistols over the past few years as an urgent requirement for use in Afghanistan.

Congrats to both Glock and our friends in the British military.

North Eastern Arms is a firearms manufacturer in Canada is set to release the new Compact Carbine Stock. It’s the first drop-in stock system for the AR for direct impingement guns that significantly reduces the length. Their 7.5” PDW AR is almost 2” shorter than a MP5A5 collapsed to give you some idea of how short it is.

Initially, it will be available to Law Enforcement and military only to start due to demand. Unfortunately, the company reps weren’t able to go into the internal mechanism of operation on this until it’s officially released on display at IWA 2013 in Germany, but they did say that it is a complete drop-in unit, and significantly improves the reliability of the return system of the AR design.

According to Sig Sauer, the SIG MPX is the world’s first submachine gun that operates with a fully closed and locked rotating bolt system. It is a gas-operated short stroke piston system and allows the shooter to change barrel length, caliber and stock configuration in the field to meet mission requirements. Additionally, they claim that it is easily convertible to 9mm NATO, .357SIG or .40S&W. But to me, one of the big advantages is that you are getting AR-style ergonomics.

The StraightJacket Barrel System from Teludyne Tech Ind is a thermal management technology that conducts heat away from the barrel and increases barrel rigidity resulting in increased accuracy and service life.

Comparative analysis of the Teludyne URG1 placed side by side to a match grade M4 resulted in cold bore accuracy improving by 75% right out of the box, and after firing 120 rounds in 2 minutes, accuracy improved by 671%. Subsequently, at 600 meters, the URG1 grouped at 7.07 inches versus the match grade M4s 54 inches tested 15 minutes after 220 rounds of rapid fire. Badger Ordnance is releasing a new rifle action called the M2013 at SHOT Show that will replace their M2008. It will use the same inlet as the 2008 and most of the internal parts will be interchangeable. Updated features will include a lighter bolt lift, one piece bolt release, light fluting on the bolt, and lightening cuts on the action itself to reduce weight and offer a sleek new look. They will be available in Short and Long Action. They will be available for purchase in late February.

Today GLOCK, Inc. announced a new addition to its pistol lineup – the GLOCK 30S. The conceal-and-carry hybrid pistol features impressive stopping power consisting of a factory-made 36 slide on top of a 30SF frame. Its compact design and simple operation allow smooth drawing in a .45 caliber pistol. The 30S packs 10 rounds of .45 ACP in a package that fits the hands of most any user. The G30S is easy to use, easy to conceal and tough to contend with.

I had an opportunity to shoot the new GLOCK 30S today. The subcompact .45 was designed as a backup gun for LEOs carrying G21 and G21SF sidearms. The idea is that it chambers the same round and can use the longer spare magazines if needed. The G30S uses a 10 round dual stack magazine so you can also run one in the chamber for a total of 11 rounds. Once again, the plus side is that it will accept the G21′s 13 round magazines. It incorporates the SF body of the G30 along with a slim slide of the G36. As you know, the G36 uses a special single stack magazine so it isn’t compatible with its bigger brothers.

However, the G30S remains a stubby, fat dual stack pistol. Even the SF variants of GLOCK pistols aren’t exactly thin. It’s great for what use as a backup but I don’t look at it as a primary weapon due to its size. For example, in spite of its subcompact size, GLOCK has adopted a familiar work around. In order to accommodate all three fingers on the pistol grip G30S magazines feature an extension. Then, you’ve got the shorter barrel and associated sight radius. It’s a niche weapon for a niche application and I’m glad they made it for those needing a primary sidearm compatible backup piece. It’s really designed to be paired with a G21(SF). It’s just not something I would expect everyone to go out and purchase for EDC.

At today’s SHOT Show Media Range Day I was one of the first to be able to shoot the new DDM4 Integrally Suppressed Rifle (ISR) from Daniel Defense. With this gun you are essentially getting two Tax Stamps for the price of one; a Suppressor and SBR.

Daniel Defense designed this new carbine to accept the increasingly popular .300 AAC round. They combined a pistol-length gas system with a 10.3″ Cold Hammer Forged barrel that features a permanently mounted 5.7″ suppressor (with removable baffle core) that together, bring the overall barrel length to just over 16″. They do this by threading and welding the suppressor to the gas block. The gas block is then in turn, mounted with a spiral roll pin and welded in place to the barrel.

Shooting was smooth and quiet. What more can I say, I only got to shoot 20 rounds through it. Hopefully, I will be spending more time with one in the near future. Although I was able to fire a full-auto model, this is obviously not a transferable option. Look for the DDM4 ISR to ship in April in semi-auto.

FirstSpear, along with Renegade Armor, Wilcox, and Aimpoint, sponsored a media range day at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department firing range. Three ranges were set up, with the first two featuring rifles by H&K and LMT, and pistols by Nighthawk Custom and SIG Sauer. The third range featured something a bit more exotic: rifles by FERFRANS, who are known for their Delayed Sear Activation System. This system made the 7.5″ 5.56 SCW PDW very controllable when fired in full-auto. It’s also very likely this system was responsible for reducing the felt recoil of the 7.62 SOACR near 5.56 levels. Wilcox also had demonstrations of their breaching torch technology; seeing the torch used to melt through rebar as quickly as it did was impressive. Overall, it was a great media day that offered the chance to try out some truly fantastic firearms. And, I got to spend it with Tactical Fanboy who wrote this article from his perspective. BTW, the photo of him with the FERFRANS SOACR is a snapshot in time. There are no rounds in the gun and he has just been handed it by the RSO. Also, his finger isn’t on the trigger.

See the TALON gyro-stabilized gun platform from Paradigm at the Legion Firearms booth (# 27108). This thing has come a long way since its first appearance on Soldier Systems. First off, they’ve added a camera system – one sensor looks through the scope and one offers a wide angle view of the target area. They also added a range finder and the system automatically calculates shot distance from heights and displays it on the hand controller screen. The TALON is totally automated and stabilized for helicopters, boats, and vehicles.

The photo shows a SCAR H mounted in the TALON, but any weapon with a bottom rail on the hand guard can be utilized.

These use installed mag wells are compatible with factory GLOCK +2 baseplates and copies, Arredondo +2 and +5 extensions, Magpul Speedplates, as well as Dawson Precision’s excellent extended tool-less magazine extensions and Ez-Off baseplates.

This new Dragon Lock holster retention system from DownEast offers Level 3 retention on a fabric holster. The design is ambidextrous and can be changed with simple tools. It will also work on Kydex or polymer holsters but was really designed for use with fabric holsters.

This is huge for small manufacturers and will be tooled up and ready to go in a month.

Additionally, DownEast has been working to improve how their polymer feed chute actually attaches to the weapon. They’ve developed a new two piece feed chute collar.
